This may be the first string quartet arrangement of Bartok’s famous piano work Allegro Barbaro, as his music has only recently come into the public domain.  One of his first compositions for piano, written when he was 30 years old, Allegro Barbaro is a fast-paced and percussive piano work inspired by the melodies and harmonies of the Hungarian folk music that Bartok collected during his travels as an ethnomusicologist. One can also hear his early experimentation with bimodality and octatonic scales. This arrangement is based on both the published piano sheet music and Bartok’s own recorded performance of this work. His performance includes idiosyncrasies not included in the printed music and which have been incorporated in this arrangement. This is a great opener or an ideal encore for a string quartet concert.

The film tells the story of two sisters coming of age and how the decisions they make impact their lives and the lives of those around them. I was honored to have been asked to write the score for this project. The version of the score presented here contains all of the music cues from the film arranged for a concert setting. The work is not necessarily intended to be performed in its entirety; movements may be selected or omitted by choice. If movements 2 or 31 are included in the performance, note that an Electric Guitar and Electric Bass Guitar are needed for movement 2, and a Vocalist is needed for movement 31.

Published by Tuxedo Music Publishing (A0.881367). Rigaudon is the fourth dance in Ravel’s popular piano suite Le Tombeau de Couperin and one of the most well known.. Ravel liked Le Tombeau so much that he later orchestrated four of the dances, ending with Rigaudon. Arranged by accomplished violinist Ted Lucas, who has decades of string quartet experience, this lively dance is a perfect concert-opener or an ideal closer as an encore. This is the only piece in Le Tombeau where Ravel did not include a metronome marking, so it can be played at any spritely tempo you are comfortable with. Take a listen to part of it.
