A four-part setting of this traditional English folk song which tells the story of a north-country maid who laments the distance from her home & ponders her options. With a different short vocalised introduction to each of the three verses and finishing with a 4th, resolving into the major key. Each verse is also harmonised differently - V.1 has very open harmony; V.2 has running quavers in AT&B; V.3 is more block harmony.  All comfortably within the ranges of average singers.  Now re-set in Musescore. This piece was written at the request of the wife of the Musical Director of the Thanet Chamber Choir as a surprise for her husband's 40th birthday.  The brief was either an anthem or some special arrangement of Happy Birthday.  Well, using words from Pliny (the Younger?) and a very disguised version of the latter, I arrived at the attached.  The MP3 was recorded by individuals at home during the second COVID lockdown and put together to be played on his birthday.  If you are looking for something more than the usual, either as a birthday treat or a concert guess the tune item, this could be for your choir.  All well within the range of any competent choir and with just one optional split (for any second basses).

According to one reviewer, this is a beautiful setting of the 12th Century words - I could not possibly comment. Starting in F minor with a harmonically open Tenor and Bass duet, the tune is repeated, with slight timing changes, by Soprano and Alto. Moving into A-flat major, the full choir picks up the energy and the piece finishes with the triumphant Deo Gracias. Although there is a fairly wide tessitura for the top 3 parts, this is a very approachable piece. Very effective in a darkened church at the start of a Lessons and Carols service.  Now re-set with minor amendments in Musescore.  With thanks to the Thanet Chamber Choir for the recording of this pieced.
