It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumn�, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days.Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “S�s were still written as “F�s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. I hope this ancient and powerful hymn finds a place to minister to today's church and believers around the world, perhaps after a sermon on God’s judgement, or for a Lent or Advent service about repentance and turning to God, both individually and as a nation.This version is in B Minor to match the original recording, and includes the chords for the whole song including the reharmonized verse with a different melody.Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site is the full piano vocal arrangement as played in the original recording.For other formats including large print, simplified, or extended choral harmony versions, please write me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. Originally titled I Cry to Thee, this work was commissioned by the Brazos Valley Chorale in the spring of 1998 and was first performed with choir and piano in May of the same year. This is the recording you will hear. The orchestration followed six years later in the spring of 2004 with the first full performance on May 23, 2004. Mass for the Soul possesses five structural elements from the psalms of lament: the address (and introductory petition), lament, confession of trust, petition, and vow of praise. It is this structure that forms the five movements. The way out of the depths begins in the possibility of prayer and the awareness that only the One who hears that prayer can draw us out of the depths. So the self that is caught in its iniquities cries out because of the need for forgiveness and because with God forgiveness is possible. Charles Wesley's poem Jacob Wrestling is better known by its first line, Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.
