Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. The threads gradually build to a tumble of ecstatic exuberance, engaging but short-lived. The remainder of the piece is a return to the mundane, ultimately settling on a plateau of stability which the listener senses to be merely a steppingstone, a pause before resuming the journey into an uncertain future …          Structurally, the work is a single movement built around an Afro-Cuban montuno pattern, with ostinati divided among the instruments. Stylistically it could be considered as “moody minimalist with a melody�. Or if that is too long and unwieldy, then perhaps just “MMMMUSIC!�          First performance in Laguna Beach, California on September 21st, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet, as part of the Sunset Serenades series. The outdoor venue, a small amphitheater in beautiful Heisler Park, high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was the perfect aerie from which to bring this piece into the world.

There IS drama here, along with the witty stuff.  After all, it is “Odd BEETHOVEN�. And “Beethoven� is synonymous with “drama�… as well as with “wit�! The overall mood is whimsical and fun – and the piece is brief, making it a perfect encore piece – short and sweet.
