Florence Price(b Little Rock, AR, 9 April 1887; d Chicago, IL, 3 June 1953) was the first African American woman to win widespread recognition as a symphonic composer, rising to prominence (with William Grant Still and William Dawson) in the 1930s. After early training with her mother she studied composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Wallace Goodrich and Frederick Shepherd Converse (1903–6) and privately with George Whitefield Chadwick. She gained an Artist’s Diploma (organ) and a piano teacher’s diploma.  In her large-scale works Price’s musical language is often conservative, in keeping with the Romantic nationalist style of the 1920s–40s, but it also reflects the influence of her cultural heritage and the ideals of the “Harlem renaissance� of the 1920s–30s. To her art songs and piano music she brought a thorough knowledge of instrumental and vocal writing, colorful harmonies and exotic modulations.The Oak from 1943 was originally written for orchestra and has been transcribed for concert band.  The PDF contains the full score and full set of parts.

As composer and organist, editor and publisher, Thomas Morley was a significant influence in the musical absorption of the Italian Madrigal style into English vocal music during the last decade of the 16th century.  Trained by William Byrd, Morley and his early Three-Part Canzonets (1593) showed his remarkable ability to combine his own individual musical creativity with the essence of the popular Italian Madrigals, resulting in the golden era of the English Madrigal School. The trio is scored for trumpet in B-flat with an alternate C trumpet part, horn in F with an alternate flugelhorn part, and trombone with an alternate treble clef euphonium part. This brass choir arrangement set for an orchestral brass section of Coleridge-Taylor's Sea Drift captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in his original vocal octet setting of a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions for vocal SATB double choir here arranged for large brass ensemble, Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore. The arrangement is scored for an orchestral brass section of three B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, four horns , three trombones and tuba.
