Their purpose - wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that Robert compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan, know they would not be forgotten. I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting, Robert says, that I went home and composed a new piece of music with the title: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. Hokkaido, Op. 157, for brass quintet was completed on 3 Jun 2024.  This piece was inspired during a United States Air Force jazz band concert throughout Hokkaido in May 2024.  The concert program included the theme song from a popular TV show shot in Hokkaido titled “Kita No Kuni Kara” in which I played a verse on the flugelhorn with the passion I developed during my years playing flugel solos in the Nebraska Brass Band.  The piece fittingly has similarities to “Sakura, Op. 154” which was composed only a month earlier.  “Hokkaido” is a beautiful flugelhorn feature, sweet homage to the breathtakingly beautiful northern island of Japan, Hokkaido.  Duration: 3:15.
