AMOUR LOINTAIN (LOVE FROM AFAR)  Advanced Intermediate Piano Soloby ROBERT VAN HORNE9 Pages In 2010, AMOUR LOINTAIN (LOVE FROM AFAR) won 2nd in the Division 7 State Contest sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association Of California. After attending a piano concert in 2009 featuring several works by Maurice Ravel, Robert was inspired to write this piano work in the style of the Impressionistic French composers.  It comprises lyrical melodies in mostly 9/8 and 5/4 meters and sequential patterns, using predominately notes from the whole tone scales. The left hand ostinato occurs mostly throughout while the right hand melody is heard in different keys. As the piece concludes, there is a brief reprise of the waltz melody that slowly fades away. The score is clearly and carefully notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings, and appropriate musical terms for playing. This piano solo makes a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals.  Duration time is about 4:30. While visiting the modern-day site, Jerry McElveen had visions of the screaming crowds while gladiators and others were killed as entertainment.  He was upset to see the current graffiti marring the stone walls of the structure.  The piano score and vocal looks difficult...but several performers have not found it to be problematic. It works as a more modern setup for the jazzy closer, DAVID Mvt IV. If the piano intro to Colosseum, seems to lag before the soprano enters...take the second ending on the intro... that will avoid the star singer having to wait too long! He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. This is a 5.0 marimba arrangement of Pat Metheny's solo baritone guitar rendition of Last Train Home as recorded on the album, One Quiet Night. It is transposed up a minor third (to the key of Ab major from F major) in order to accommodate the lowest notes of the baritone guitar (A1) on the 5.0 marimba (C2). Perhaps someday someone will make a 5.3 octave version of this in Metheny's original key. During the pandemic, I have deliberately chosen to take a deeper look at some of the music that moves me deeply. When I was a kid my next neighbor, Bob Holt, happened to be the local college music professor. He introduced me to a lot of wonderful music, including Pat Metheny’s album “Still Life Talking,� which features the song, “Last Train Home.� In 2003, Metheny released a solo baritone guitar album, “One Quiet Night,� on which “Last Train Home� makes a re-appearance. I’ve always thought that this version of the tune would make a great marimba project.
