Hummel, a music publisher in Amsterdam, published a pirated edition of Johann Baptist Vanhal's popular Symphony in D minor. In this edition, the middle two movements were thrown out and replaced with a slow movement for string orchestra. I have taken this movement for string orchestra and basso continuo and arranged it for solo keyboard. The primary thematic material is based on a simple downward lilting gesture. This lilt is sweetened with parallel falling thirds later in movement. This contrasts against the insistance of the secondary melodic material and creates a formal structure that exists between binary form and a rudimentary sonata form.

The key of 6 flats is used, so that the player or student can get the feel of being somewhat percussive on the black keys. The white keys used are Cb, Fb and Abb! The melody is stated in thirds, with larger sonorities at the cadence points. The chords Fb Maj7 and Abb Maj9 are used, so that the sudden shock of seeing chords in sharps juxtaposed against the 6 flats is avoided. It really is easier to play than to read.
