In the older myths, they were the daughters of Nyx, but later, they are more often portrayed as the offspring of Zeus and Themis. Here, they are depicted as three interludes in a short string quartet (Violin I & II, Viola, 'Cello).

This sweet, well known Christmas melody was originally a Finnish springtime song, dating to the 13th Century. It was published in 1582 in a book of seventy-four songs. After receiving a copy of that book as a gift, John Mason Neale set his lyrics celebrating the famous Bohemian (907-935) to this melody. In 1854, the book Carols for Easter-tide was published, including Good King Wenceslas as a Springtime song. This arrangement has 5 verses in the key of G. It represents Good King Wenceslas and his Page trudging through (eighth notes) the harsh winter weather on December 26 as they leave their warm castle to help the poor. Occasionally there is a pause as they catch their breath or look through the swirling snow at how far they have traveled. The fourth verse represents the Page walking in King Wenceslas’s footsteps. The melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.

The voices promised me scholarships and fame. The voices questioned my logic. The voices tried to make me doubt my motives and character. The voices ridiculed me and my desires to do good. The voices told me that they loved me, but wouldn't wait for me if I went on a mission. All of those voices were demeaning of me if I went on a mission. They also promised me joy, but only if I decided not to go on a mission. I ultimately decided to go on a mission. By going on a mission I was put in a situation where I could testify of God's gospel truths. Those people hearing the truths had the opportunity to pray to God to find out for themselves if what they had been taught was true. Those people that talked to God in prayer joined the church. Why? Because God answered their prayers. Some of those new members went on missions to other lands converting through the spirit of the Holy Ghost others, who in turn went on missions to other lands. The cycle continues. Just one person doing what he knows is right can set off a chain reaction for the good that will go on and on.

Dances of Peril is comprised of three movements. While they differ in their melodic, harmonic and rhythm languages, they are all fast, energetic, and unsettling. I imagine them as three peculiar dances in a small, mysterious party. While dance is often an act of joy and love, these dances are not. Scored for clarinet, violin, and cello, these dances involve three dancers; the relationships among them are unclear. Their motions are fast, sharp; at times, aggressive. The looks on their eyes convey suspicion. Each of them knows that something bad is about to happen, but they have to play the game. Like a good “whodunit†thriller, it is unclear who the source of danger is. And this uncertainly enhances the fear and pushes each dancer to move faster, to seize control, to deceive. Who knows how this will end.

I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words   I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story.   The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895.
