The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. I hope everyone has been doing well during this crazy time.  Originally I wrote these preludes as parts of composing exercises for Alan Belkin's book Music Composition: Craft and Art.  They sat around for a bit until during the quarantine when I took a look at them again.  I realized that these pieces had a lot of character to them, and they were quite distinct in nature.  The first movement is a simple ternary form piece which begins and ends in the key of g minor and has a very neo-romantic tonal space. The B section is a brisk, more straight-forward tonal texture, but has a fun little twist sequencing up near the end of the section.  The second movement was composed with the B vs Bb dichotomy functioning as a germinating cell for the rest of the movement's material. More impressionistic and mysterious than the other two movements, it also lacks a more traditional formal structure, instead relying on the development of motivic cells to make the movement cohere together in a logical way. The third movement is also a modified ternary movement, but with the A sections being played at different speeds, and the second A ending having an outro section attached.  The B section is also more like a sonata form developmental section (without the required tonic-dominant modulatory feature). This movement is not only tonally very colorful, but also dynamic in regards to tempo, slowing and quickening often, giving the piece a continual sense of renewed spirit.  Rather than just release the preludes as seperate pieces,  I found that when played in a certain sequence, they represent a progression of mental and spiritual being that many people have, including myself, been going through during this time.  As such, I made them into a suite.  If it brings you a little bit of joy or excitement during this time (and after this is over), that's all that I can hope for.

Rumor has it that this playground is haunted by some of the kids that used to come here all the time… Not really haunted in a scary way because they are kids. But their spirits live here and man are they energetic. All day, All night, shenanigans would happen here and yet, the police could never find any evidence. At this point, the police reports have to say something about ghosts considering they never have any evidence to give an account. The Graveyard Playground tells the tale of five kids whose spirits are confined to this playground.

The whole piece is filled with little motifs yet there is one motif that unifies the entire piece.

The Wiggly Tooth is a song for Unison Children's Choir with Piano Accompaniment that talks about a child who discovers they have a wiggly tooth and how they wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle that tooth to get it to come out.  The words and melody are fun and catchy, with a surprise ending for the audience when the tooth finally comes out.  There are two verses and a really fun, catchy chorus.  The accompaniment carries the melody, so this song is suitable for small or young choirs as well.  It also can be used as a solo, and would be great for concerts and music festivals.  I currently do not have it recorded with a choir, but hope to have one of my local music teacher friends record it for me with their choir in the fall after they return to school.

They take the musical style of Nocturnes, with the third Consolation being an homage to Chopin's nocturnes. Liszt's ability to bring out the melody notes and subdue the harmony is necessary in interpreting these pieces. They are cataloged as S.172, a part of Liszt's more extensive work catalog created by Humphrey Searle.
