A challenging, but haunting piece with a cinematic feel, which would work on voicing (bringing out melody lines), close harmonies, rubato and pedalling. Written after a holiday in Italy, visiting the rather dark old churches, this short piece paints an intricate picture of melodic lines (the connections between people), the hard times (chromaticism, lack of harmonic resolution) and, in the second half, the special times (expressive melodic lines and beautiful harmonies). It finishes on two terse chords which resolve to the tonic chord in A major. Approx. 3 minutes' duration, written in A major throughout, but many other tonalities are visited. On 2 pages.
