The lyrics are a mother’s advice to her daughter, warning her to “learn how to pray� and to “fall on your knees before you fall in the wrong direction.� This arrangement is deliberately “choral,� preferring to honor Ms. Foster’s exquisite vocal shadings—a bend here, a fall-off there—by avoiding exact imitation. The basses provide the rhythm section of electric bass and closed hi-hat cymbal, leaving the upper three parts in gospel harmony in all but a few measures of the piece. The divisi is confined to a few chords and is not difficult. An arresting and totally unique setting that will be a favorite with any group that is comfortable singing unaccompanied.

I've found that music with autobiographical references has a particular expressive strength.I was in Finland once (performing at the World Tango Summit in Seinäjoki, 2011). The city of Seinäjoki is quite close to the Arctic Circle, so in summer the sun doesn't really set: instead of a night you have several hours of an eternal twilight.The feeling was that of a transition stopped in time, as a slow motion film of someone springing over a wide river. This can be a wonderful experience (and for me it was), but can be also unnatural to us, Latinamericans, used to the day is sun and night is no sun approach to life.Anecdotically, the temperature during these days in Seinäjoki was 31 Celsius. So my experience of Finland is that of a very warm place. I guess other persons have colder experiences. It was originally conceived as a loop station composition for 7-string electric violin, but can also be performed as a fiddle solo with any form of standard accompaniment. The looper arrangement was recorded on 7-string violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 tempo-synced tracks with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, BOSS RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can play all of the melodies & harmonies, but some accompaniment parts in the loop arrangement will have to be transposed 8va.The tune itself is a fairly standard Celtic jig+reel medley. In the loop station arrangement there is an extended opening that explores some suspended harmonies over a pedal-tone D. String pads & chopping grooves are stacked in the accompaniment track to bring in a more modern fusion approach to the Celtic sound.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but as I mentioned it also works as a violin solo. Using the included lead sheets, you can perform this with guitar, piano, bass, etc. The sky is the limit, feel free to get creative and share your performance!Please, if you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me via my website, www.kylepudenz.com/, or on Instagram @theviolinvagabond
