One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. In the middle section, the percussionist bangs loudly on metal to sound like submarine pipes, structure, and hull breaking. The loss of the USS Thresher (SSN-593) spurred the Navy to institute the very successful Submarine Safety Program (SUBSAFE).
