The Slavonic Dances (Czech: Slovanské tance) are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Op. 46 and Op. 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and full of national character, were well received at the time and today are considered among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture. Contrary to what the title might suggest, the dances are not so much inspired by Slavic folk music generally, but specifically by styles and forms from Bohemia. In these pieces, Dvořák never actually quotes folk melodies, but evokes their style and spirit by using traditional rhythmic patterns and structures in keeping with traditional folk dances.This is my arrangement of No 7 from the first set Op.46This is titled Sko�ná  which is a rapid Slavic folk-dance, normally in 24 metre.Arranged double wind quintet and bass.

I continued writing anyway and after finishing 'Fiddlin' On' I suddenly remembered the elusive tune (virtually note for note) and promptly transcribed what was originaly called 'The Donkey Song'. I renamed it 'Owen's on the Fiddle' (see notes). Ragatina No.7 and Owen's on the Fiddle are now separate entities connected only by my rapidly decaying brain synapses.

The 4 players each perform on 4 or 5 different sizes of saxophones for a total of 23 saxophones. Contact the composer for information about the reduced version for 13 players. The first movement uses primarily air sounds including playing the saxophone without the mouthpiece in the style of the ney. The second movement is a rapid rhythmic romp from beginning to end and uses the technique of taleas borrowed from Medieval motets. The last movement features a long, slow melodic line punctuated by air sounds and a drone from the tenor saxophone. The duration is 12 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.The premiere was by Daniel Kientzy with Le Saxtuor at the Extasis Festival 88 in Geneva, Switzerland on October 16, 1988.
