Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work for solo clarinet and piano composed by Kara Williams. Each movement draws on inspiration from Kara’s own time at sea serving in the military imagined as a suite of four short programmatic movements.
 
We follow a young sailor as they stagger around the deck in the rough weather, finally succumbing to the corkscrew motion of the ocean in ‘Sea Sick Shanty’; a moment of peace and beauty for the young sailor as the ship sails through an ‘Archipelago’ teaming with marine life; In ‘Brew Time March, the young sailor excitedly hears the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, they unexpectedly hear the sound of work recommencing, and scurry back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time! The preparation, spectacle, pride, and excitement of ‘Sailing into Harbour’ completes this suite, suitable for an intermediate to more advanced player looking for something entertaining and a little bit different!

Lip-slurs: Not every brass player's idea of fun but an essential facet of technique. In this treatment of Psalm 134, all instruments, except the bass trombone, play their entire part in one position or valve combination with a lot of slurs. Attention must be paid to rhythmic accuracy, both at the beginning of notes and their precise ending. For the best effect, a full tenuto is observed, sustaining each note until it either stops or clicks to the next. Not as easy as it looks! The instruments played can be varied; • Voice 1: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♭ pressing 1-3; or low F-trumpet open. • Voice 2: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♭ or bugle or clarion. • Voice 3: Alto trombone (4th pos.); an E♭ horn, pressing 1 & 2; or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Tenor trombone in 6th pos. or French horn (open in F) or a baritone/euphonium pressing 1-3. • Voice 5: Tenor trombone in 1st pos. or baritone/euphonium open. • Voice 6: Ideally Bass trombone but fits on tuba, tenor trombone/euphonium etc. A standard brass quintet plus one guest could distribute the parts thusly: • Voices 1 & 2: Two trumpets. • Voice 3: Guest on alto trombone, E♭ horn or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Horn open in F as 1st trombone. • Voice 5: Trombone as 2nd trombone • Voice 6: Tuba Some tune-up/ ensemble tuning exercises are included. This setting is a mixture of styles described as contre-pointillist; counterpoint in a natural pointillism where the Cantus Firmus and other lines weave between overlapping harmonic series; and diatonic clusters, which at best will remind listeners of a carillon of church bells. Loys Bourgeois' melody for Psalm 134, better known to Anglophones as The Old Hundredth, was added to the Genevan Psalter in 1551. Leading reformist Calvin had commissioned vernacular (spoken language of the people; in this case, French) settings of Psalm melodies for Protestants to sing and the Genevan Psalter was first published in 1539. Subsequent editions added further melodies but some were still used for more than one Psalm. The lesser-known Lausanne Psalter was the first to give each Psalm its own melody. Psalm 134 is associated with Michaelmas (29th September) and Christmas festivities. Enjoy!

This is a setting of verses 1,3 and 4 of Laurence Binyon's famous poem written at the start of World War 1.  It is scored for solo baritone/bass or unison choir accompanied by organ or piano. I have taken a liberty with the text in verse1 to help appeal to a more international audience.  The original is; 'A mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea.'  The accompaniment in the last verse incorporates the 'Last Post' bugle call.  If an organ is being used, please solo this on a subtle trumpet stop if available.  An SATB choral version of this work is also available.  .

This is a collection of 20 lyrical, contemplative trumpet solos. They may be played in a variety of settings and will enhance the ability of the trumpeter to play long, lyrical phrases. These solos are also ideal for developing a rich, broad, singing sound. I love playing them in a large room like a church sanctuary. They seem to come alive in those kind of settings. I have always loved the lyrical side of the trumpet and these pieces will appeal to both the classical and jazz trumpeter.

West Texas, Fort Davis, is the fourth movement of A Texas Symphony, and depicts a day in the life of a Texas Buffalo cavalry soldier, riding out on patrol. The music opens with a trumpet solo, representing an original bugle theme.  The opening music is rhythmic with overlapping themes that depict activity on the parade field of the fort.  As the soldiers ride out, the percussion switches from snare to claves and tambourine, and the rhythm switches from march-like to gigue-like symbolizing the cavalry riding out.  At one point, a chase ensues, then the opening themes return with the soldiers' return to the fort.  Length is approximately 12 minutes.

For Independence Day celebrations or other patriotic events, Thomas Smith's General Mixup, U.S.A. medley provides a rousing number. Many patriotic favorites such as the Star-Spangled Banner, Columbia Gem of the Ocean, Dixieland, Year of Jubilo, Battle Cry of Freedom, among other songs and bugle calls, are all woven together. So many songs come and go in such short order that it's fun for an audience to keep up!

There are some technical challenges present for all parts, but many can be alleviated by taking things at a tempo that works best for your complement of players. A great arrangement for your 4th of July event!

Boots is a poem by Kipling about the monotony of life for a soldier during the Second Boer War. Here it has been set to music. This is a percussion arrangement recommended for the classroom. Malagueña is a song by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. It was originally the sixth movement of Lecuona's Suite Andalucía (1933), to which he added lyrics in Spanish. The song has since become a popular, jazz, marching band, and drum and bugle corps standard and has been provided with lyrics in several languages. In general terms, malagueñas are flamenco dance styles from Málaga, in the southeast of Spain. This is an arrangement for the guitar.
