This book contains 30 original chants composed for solo trumpet. The pieces are lyrical in nature and may be used in a variety of settings. They work well as a prelude or call to worship or even as recital selections, concert pieces or as encores to performances. These chants require sensitivity in interpretation and phrasing, a full, rich tone and control over breathing and volume. They also serve as good daily practice pieces. I hope you enjoy these solos as much as I have in writing and performing them.

For God and Country was written in honor of Lt. Aloysius Schmitt for the Loras College Wind Ensembles, Glenn Pohland, director. The Catholic chaplain and Columbia College (now Loras College) graduate gave his life helping twelve of his shipmates exit a porthole on the side of the U.S.S. Oklahoma as it took enemy torpedo fire, rolled over and finally faltered on the morning of December 7, 1941.

Throughout the work, the Navy Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a reoccurring motive.  Several U.S. Navy bugle calls are also used in the work including portions of Abandon Ship, Man Overboard, Man Torpedo Defense Battery and Watertight Doors.  The work ends with a quiet and solemn rendition of the Navy Hymn in various solo instruments.

This arrangement written by Nicolas Prost in 2016 is a free reconstitution of the lost work Hymne sacré pour les instruments de Sax (Sacred song for the instruments of Sax), which was first performed at the Hertz concert hall in Paris on 3 February 1844. Adolphe Sax himself played the saxophone part. It was the first time that this instrument was played in a concert. The piece performed was an arrangement of Chant sacré for six voices and piano composed by Berlioz in December 1843.

This popular melody was composed by Charles Henry Purday in the 19th Century, but the popular hymn is attributed to J B Dykes and is known as 'Sandon'. He extended it into the well-known verison often featured at funeral services in the United Kingdom. This version features a rendition of 'The Last Post' bugle call after a modulation to Bb.

“For the Fallen� was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba� and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old�) has become known as the “Ode of Remembrance�, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Post�. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle� portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust� compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plain�. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight� (reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow old�. A version of this suite with piano accompaniment is also available on this website.

I've included the Trumpet 1 part in E flat too. The descant composed by the arranger (Frank Stubbs) reflects a militaristic style with bugle call style motifs. This arrangement will make an exiting uplifting addition to any church service!!

William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a composer and musician who was known as the Father of the Blues. Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States.

Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.

W.C. Handy wrote numerous compositions including St Louis Blues, Memphis Blues, Yellow Dog Blues, along with this march Hail to the Spirit of Freedom written in 1915. This march was written for the Lincoln Jubilee commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation held in Chicago. There are quotes Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, Columbia, Gem of the Ocean, Hail Columbia, My Old Kentucky Home, Old Black Joe, Hot Time in the Old Town, Dixie. Yankee Doodle, and the bugle call Reveille.
