This is an amazing arrangement of Monti's Csardas (or Czardas, depending on your spelling preference). It is a virtuoso showpiece that can be performed by either 2 violas, 2 cellos, or 1 viola and 1 cello.   This is not your typical solo with lame accompaniment; the two parts are completely equal in importance. The melody bounces back and forth between the two instruments, and the second line is often as interesting as the melody. This is a huge crowd-pleaser!

Silver Wedding, (Die Silberne Khasene in Yiddish), is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast.

Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.

Chosn Kale Mazel Tov, (Good Luck to the Bride and Groom), is a Jewish wedding tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Often shortened to Mazel Tov, it is thought that the song was written by Sigmund Zelig Mogulesko. Born in Romania, he was a larger than life character who dominated Yiddish theatre on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. Mogulesko was a childhood prodigy, equally adept as a composer, playwright, singer, comedian, actor and impresario. Mazel Tov was written for a wedding scene in one of his productions but has since become one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards.

Mazel Tov is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo, with constant variations in the accompaniment. Mazel Tov is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.

Bublitschki is a Ukrainian/Jewish Folk song, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Bublitschki was written in 1922 by Yakov Jadow. The title means pretzels in Russian and was inspired by the pretzel sellers by the railway station in Odessa. Jadow observed that the street-vendors were poverty-stricken and wrote the song as a lament. Initially popular in the Soviet Union, a recording by the Barry Sisters in 1939 brought this song to an international audience.
