Runaway Steam Train Boogie is a fun programmatic saxophone quartet (SATB) illustrating a steam train on its runaway journey. Air blown through the instrument whilst moving the fingers depicts the release of steam at the start of the train's journey soon followed by the whistle portrayed through lip scoops. The melody line is shared between soprano and alto saxophones with the tenor and baritone saxophones characterising the train engine with the opening section outlining a 12-bar blues sequence. The tenor saxophone takes up the mantle carrying the tune through a later minor section. The train gathers pace throughout the piece arriving at 220BPM in a final section flourish. Tempo markings can be adjusted to suit the ensemble. This is a fun piece that I think young musicians will enjoy.  The percussion parts provide the train sounds. I envisioned this piece as sort of a story in which the train arrives at the station to pick up passengers and then makes stops along the way to pick up additional passengers, represented by the different sections of the orchestra. Two players also play a train whistle and a train bell, or similar sounding bell. The ride pulls our slowly from the station in 4/4, accelerates to a comfortable pace. As the train climbs a big hill, it slows and as it starts down the other side, it chugs along in a nice 12/8 feel. A gradual slow down happens as the train enters the station.
