He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. By the very end, the ride is over and the train is pulling into its final stop at the station.This piece is very much influenced by the piano piece Le Chemin de Fer, by Charles-Valentin Alkan. I highly recommend you find a recording of this piano piece to listen to. Don’t try to play Train Ride that fast though! My recording of the bassoon piece is at quarter note at 164. You need not play it that fast.
