If played as I imagine it its length should be around 4'30. It starts simply, with a melancholic melody (A) and then it switches to a difficult section (B) in which the player will need power - especially on the left hand - and technical skills. The dynamic and mood contrast between A and B should be huge. The main theme then comes back, but very modified and contaminated (A1). One last theme is exposed (C) before the reprise (A) and the conclusion of the music piece. There are many modulations in this waltz but none of them leads to a stable tonaily change. And we all know what snickering can do to your vocal apparatus, right?!     The audio clip is from the premiere of the music comedy Incident at Burro Java. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1294135). This is a really lively setting of a colorful text by Danny Alorean. The main theme is in 7/8 time, divided into 2, 2, and 3. It might look a bit daunting to some, but it's easy when counted as 1-2-1-2-1-2-3. Its recommended that singers practise this rhythm first, perhaps by clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SAT choir with keyboard accompaniment. It is thus a useful piece for high school or college choirs that have no bass section. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it. Choir members need to be reasonably experienced at singing independent vocal parts. The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. This is a new arrangement (as of Seotember 2023) in which the music has been transposed down one tone from the original. This joyful anthem would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. The vocal range is as follows: Soprano: C4 - F5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor C3 - E4.  (Duration 03:03).

Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.

Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

And though the music is a little more meditative than many tunes, it is still in keeping with the original expression that helped give rise to the hymn:  “Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Him with them all!” After the piano and flute introduction, the new tune is lightly harmonized in both stanzas, but each has it’s own unique voicing at My gracious Master and You break the power, respectively. The brief flute/C instrument solo can add a lot to the piece, but an optional cut from the end of m.41 to m.59 and on to the key change could be offered in the score. After the key change the melody returns in unison, followed by a worshipful close. The idea Manny has created here is a Percussion Jam featuring any of the Afro-Cuban Percussion instruments. Manny picked the Timbales as a guide by performing Afro-Cuban Ad-Lib rhythms. For a novice in Afro-Cuban Music, this written solo would give you plenty of ideas to work with. You can either do the written solo or create one of your own. You must remember that Afro-Cuban Drumming is based heavily on syncopation so, soloing as if you were playing a drumset won't work here. The solo can be shared not only by the Timbales but also by the Congas and Bongo Player. The chart is rich with ostinato breaks of the percussion that tie the phrase of the melody with the song. The breaks must be played as written but if the section creates a break of its own, that will work too. The only requirement is the number of bars for each break must match the chart.

It is a cheerful waltz but quite schmaltzy and nostalgic too. I take it through the 2 keys of F major and Gb major. I do use 10ths quite a bit in my playing but they can easily be replaced with single bass notes or octaves as required.I don't indicate pedaling, fingering or dynamics as no two piano teachers ever agree on such things and I prefer to entrust the tunes interpretation to the individual pianist. Likewise the suggested tempo is not written in stone.I enjoyed writing this waltz and hope it brings a similar pleasure to anyone who learns to play it.
