The sound sample was recorded live by the composer with Tasse on recorder. The pdf file contains the score and parts and also an optional version in which the recorder part can be swapped around between alto, soprano and tenor recorders, as in the recording. The music also appears as a duet for flute and guitar or clarinet and guitar under the title Venus has left the building.

This is a rather long piece (about 22 minutes) - but quite amenable to breaking it up any number of ways (by month, quarter, etc).  I wrote this over the course of the Covid shutdown, when we were pretty much housebound for long periods.  It's divided into 12 sections, one for each month, beginning in March 2020 - when we here in Canada first found out about the approaching pandemic.  I tried to represent each month as it affected me - some sadder, some a bit more optimistic.  I especially like December - mostly sad, with a brief reprieve for Christmas, then back to sad.  In this neck of the woods, Christmas was all but cancelled as we were pretty much in lockdown;  at the last minute, restrictions were eased to allow small gatherings for the Holiday.  Overall, it was a sad, lonely year - especially for musicians!  Whatever your personal stance on the pandemic, it certainly affected us all - and resulted in the loss of many lives.

This piece was intended for Three Blessings, Op. 14, which in itself was going to be a larger piece, but could not elaborate on the material at the time of writing the piece. Furthermore, I felt that it was better as its own piece. Toccata in A Major, Op. 22 revolves around a simple melody with the perpetual sixteenth-note ostinato motive, which is complicated with wider intervals and soft dynamics. It's a long arrangement, as it does follow the mold of the sung recordings, but there are built in options to cut it short– or keep it going– if desired. A shorter version is contained on the first 3 pages and is more intermediate, whereas the full version becomes more advanced as it progresses, especially in the EPIC final choruses. Play 1 or 2 verses with choruses, or the entire arrangement. 2 key options available: Db & C. (It was originally arranged in Db, then transposed to C. Some chord voicings and fingerings might need to be adjusted in Db but some pianists– like myself– actually prefer the original 5 flat version).
