A couple or a few years ago during the Pandemic, there was a Discord Server vs Server Competition going on, and one of the online virtual group communities out of all the other servers took part in a theme called Dreams. When the event started, I immediately started composing this beautiful composition, and chose the instrumentation for Uncommon Woodwinds (Alto Flute, English Horn, and Sopranino Sax), Strings, Harp, and Crotales. However, my submission entry didn't make it to the final Dreams EP as expected. But the admins of the online orchestra group told me that I can still host it as a community project, and it just so happens that I actually did do that, and I've gotten a good amount of submissions from the members themselves, went through all the mixing and editing, etc, before releasing the final performance.This piece is meant to be described about dreaming to a wonderful place you might've remembered, and haven't forgotten in a long time, experiencing the deja vu moments of what you think might've happened long time ago, hence the title, of course.

Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for the chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it  grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise.. The piece has a distinct and unique setting and the theme is paraphrased and made for a theonlonious monk kind of jam on a cool tune I teach with kids . Arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prelude and it was well received with a jamming drummer.

I arranged this for my 7th grade jazz combo (a few somewhat advanced students that were interested in learning jazz).  I initially arranged it for 1 trumpet, 1 sax, 1 tenor, and piano but it is a flexible arrangement with the melody doubled in the trumpet and sax and the tenor and optional trombone part have harmony.  You could use the optional trombone in addition to the tenor or instead of tenor.  If you use a bass or bari sax, tell your piano player to cut the bass clef and just comp on the chords.  This arrangement would also work nicely as a saxophone choir, with or without piano accompaniment.  You could even use this as a solo for one trumpet or one sax and piano. You can easily add a drummer and just have them play a simple swing beat.

He and his fellow students were working on a special project studying contemporary composers whose work engages with climate change, environmentalism, and the natural environment. The students had been asked to read a chapter from David Haskell’s Sounds Wild and Broken and had further been given the following direction to guide them: “we are assigning each of you to a project in which you will seek out song repertoire from a living composer whose work responds to climate change or the natural environment, heightening our connection to and awareness of the natural world. This topic has arisen from a call to Bard faculty to #MakeClimateAClass: Bard faculty are urged to use our collective power as educators to engage with the climate change crisis.�Jun wrote to me that he was drawn to my music and asked whether any of my songs might fit within this subject area. At the time I had plenty of songs that spoke of the natural world, but none I could categorize as specifically dealing with the class’ more narrow focus, so I offered to write this song on a poem by one of my favorite poets, Carl Sandburg, who even by the early twentieth century was noting the degradation of the natural environment and its impact on life of all kinds trying to adjust to changed circumstances brought on in one way or another by man. I quickly found the poem Buffalo Dusk, seeing how strongly it speaks of the extinction of species and the loss that represents. Jun and his teachers remarked what a “beautiful and sad poem� it was, so in short order I was pleased to present this song to Jun, who gave Buffalo Dusk its first performance in April of 2023 at the Bard Conservatory.

This beautiful waltz can be used at any time during the year, but I have commonly used it as a Jazz Christmas song since the lyrics are about a child being born and the beauty of that moment.  This is for an intermediate/advanced choir, though it is a good stretch for an intermediate choir in high school and college. There is a scat/solo group section that widens into a grand ending with a gospel-like ostinato at the end. Here is the place for your solo riffers and belters to solo at the end over top of the ostinato and have church at the end with your singers and audience. This is a crowd pleaser and a great concert ender.

My challenge when writing this piece was to incorporate two different dance styles, and I immediately decided it was time to face the disco music of my childhood. Yes, I had the Bee Gees on LP when I was a kid.…and ABBA…but I left them out of this piece.Obviously, this is meant to be fun. There are direct (if not always obvious) quotations to the following songs:              Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bell�              “Night Fever� by the Bee Gees              Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive� (Just had to be included)              Lipps Inc’s “Funktown�              and “Boogie Nights� from HeatwaveThe ancient dance form known as the pavane is, weirdly enough, the perfect pairing with the disco…in that their rhythmic structures easily go together, allowing me to spread the disco material around throughout the piece. In fact, the references to “I Will Survive� are in the slower pavane section, not the disco.The piece is basic A-B-A form (Disco-Pavane-Disco) with a fadeout ending…because in all my research I don’t remember finding a single disco piece that didn’t have a fadeout ending. It just wasn’t done. Please have some fun listening to this piece, because I had a great time writing it. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever written..pdf contains a complete set of score and parts.
