The Two English Idylls of 1910-1911 is his first surviving orchestral work and was first performed in Oxford in 1912. The delicacy and skill of his orchestration distinguish these folk song-based rhapsodies. In the first, three tunes are used, Dabbling in the dew, Just as the tide was flowing and the lively Henry Martin. All were collected by Butterworth in Sussex. His 2 English Idylls are the prequel to his Third Idyll - The Banks of Green Willow, which is perhaps his best known piece.I have an arrangement of that piece for wind quintet.

You may be familiar with mirror writing for the piano (see Vincent Persichetti's Mirror Etudes). So I took the busy right hand part of Calixa's piece and made a mirror for the left hand; original left hand figures went to the right. However, the accompaniment figures are not mirrored, but newly composed (the exact mirror was too dull). A kind of atonality is the delightful result.

Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery.  It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents.  Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom.  Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage.  They sang hopefully:  Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus!
