Suggested skill level is Advanced Beginner and above. This can be practiced at any speed and the use of barr chords keeps the fingering pretty simple. This isn't intended as a complete song, but rather is a study on the blues chord progression and an exercise in strumming and timing. Get the basic pattern down and you can add a startling amount of improvisation and your own idea of what the blues should be using just basic pentatonic in the box notes/shapes.

This ‚Suite’ is not one of my ‘epic’ instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom. Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. Description This “Meditation,� in the unusual combination of flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and trumpet, uses melodic phrases from Kremser Tune, used to sing We Gather Together, and Dona Nobis Pacem. The latter is a round and gives a texture of flowing counterpoint to the homophonic stateliness of the hymn tune. The trumpet gives a clarion sound to entrances of the hymn tunes but elsewhere is mellowed by the three woodwinds. As is common practice in chamber music, each performer will need to listen to the other instruments to achieve a balanced sound. For this reason, relatively few dynamic markings are in the parts, as the performers will determine these in each performance environment. Note that this is not an arrangement or medley of these two melodies, but a distinct composition built on their melodic phrases (motives). For Christian worship, this short piece is appropriate for services of Christian unity and peace, and, in the United States, for Thanksgiving Day. This composition is also available as a standard woodwind quartet (fl ob cl bsn). The first performance was on November 5, 2023, at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Bugs Bower composed several volumes of Bop Duets.  Like so many other jazz musicians, my roommate and I spent countless hours playing through the volume we had, him on tenor sax and me on trumpet.  Playing them is a masterclass in jazz phrasing, and studying them is a masterclass in the classic principles of counterpoint.  It's a little bit like a Bach fugue.  You start with a short catchy theme, and then let it go where it wants to go, but always building on that theme.   I titled this piece Sundry Quartet because I liked bassoon for the bottom voice (trpt, hrn, trbn, and bsn), but a second trombone could just as well play the bottom.  Level: advanced intermediate.  Duration: 3 minutes, 12 seconds. .

This is the first movement from Suite Grandkids which contains six pieces originally scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grankids that I had at that time (2005). This version is for classical guitar duo. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Riely's Dance was intended to present only African rhythms with no melody, but a rock n' roll middle somehow snuck in. This arrangement of one of the Baroque period's most famous pieces is not for the faint-hearted.  It's a difficult piece, probably for graduate students, but a great tour-de-force for a brass section when it's put together.  And it's doable.  All the long lines are split between different players, and even when everyone is in for a long phrase there are little catch-breath openings for everyone.  But it's a long blow - not many rests for anyone.  If you're looking for a real showpiece for your brass section, this is it.

A short little ditty from smack in the middle of the Grosse Fuge. Instrumentally challenging to put together (it is from a string quartet), but the individual parts are totally playable by a amateur player. If you have the enviable opportunity to play with a brass quartet, this is a great piece to add to the repertoire.

It has a lot of tricky moments, but one of the most important challenges is the pedaling, which should be kept minimal. The tempo can be flexible, but a good rule of thumb is that the faster it is played, the less pedal should be used. Voicing should also be stressed when the texture is thicker. Released as a single, it also appeared on a compilation album of the same name, which The Pipkins shared with another up-and-coming UK group, The Sweet. It's been covered in various languages and released as singles around the world, but more often associated with advertising in the UK and also a version by Grotbags The Witch (played Carol Lee Scott) from popular children's TV show 'Emu's World', featuring Rod Hull and Emu in their famous Pink Windmill. A nostalgic treat for most, but a joyful little number nonetheless.
