Fein, whose father lived at this address on a street in South Philadelphia, she found mystical attachment to this number.  When she died, I wrote this piece in her memory, and used these numbers in subtle ways to create the work.  Melomanie performed and recorded the work on their CD Flourescence under its original title, Partita 622 [sic]. The harpsichord should be tuned as close to equal temperament as possible if playing with modern instruments, but a slight tinge of mean tone is highly acceptible.  Melomanie performed with a viola da gamba but with otherwise modern instruments.  Parts are included in the score.

Donald J. (no, not him) Grout says that John Dowland's songs of 1590's sound entirely modern. Well, they do! STING recorded them, if that means anything to you. So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?!  I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth-century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754).It exemplifies nineteenth-century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. Although not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit.The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances.
