The Suite for String Quartet was probably written when Butterworth was a student of Wood at the Royal College of Music in 1910-11 but there is no record of any performance during the composer's lifetime. This is the only one of Butterworth's instrumental works with a multi-movement structure and, perhaps coincidentally, the only one not reliant on tone poetry.

Lili of St. Luke'sbyFran OlsenIn 1990, a small black and white spotted dog, who had been found wandering, abused and sick in Surry County, Virginia, was scheduled to be put down by the Surry SPCA as unadoptable.  Three placements had failed because the young female was too afraid of the people.  Her last chance was Richard Lee Austin, curator of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia.  Austin had reluctantly agreed to look at the small spoodle.  He had just lost a beloved Pekingese of 18 years and did not want to go through the pain of another loss.  Lili, however, immediately seemed to know that this was her person, came directly to him and won his heart.  It was a mutual love affair.Lili went eagerly to work with Dick at the Gift Shop of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia, for the next 11 years.  She was gracious and never intrusive with the visitors.  Small children were able to approach Lili without fear.  She seemed to understand that she needed to be quite still with them.In 2000, Lili became the star of her own book, Lili of St. Luke's:  The Blessing of the Animals.  Written by Fran Olsen, a volunteer at the church, and illustrated by Buttons Boggs, the charming book tells the story of Lili's desire to go to church.  The animals in the church yard scoff at her.  She finally succeeds in going to church for the annual Blessing of the Animals service which commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi.  Since the book was published many children have come to the church to have their picture taken with Lili.Mrs. Olsen, who is also the publisher, has donated a dollar from the sale of each book to be shared with Historic St. Luke's Church and three area humane societies with which Lili has been associated.  Contributions in the first six months of publication were $1200.Lili died on June 7, 2001, from cancer.  A week before she died, she made a personal appearance at a local elementary school.  As always, she was gracious and gentle, even though later it was apparent that she was deathly ill.  A bronze statute is planned to honor the gentle spoodle and will be placed at the church so children can continue to have their picture taken with her.  This elegy was commissioned for performance at the annual Blessing service.

Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. The Italian group Black Box covered Fantasy in 1990 on their debut album Dreamland. This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. Simply a three-tone scale, nothing more to it than that! highly pianistic, very mirror-able, and able to display sudden and dramatic shifts in harmonic colors while keeping a steady cascade of notes in motion. Octaves in the left hand make both a bassline and a melody underneath these arpeggiated scalar figures. The piece is in 12/8 time, as is often used for these three-notes up-three notes down, and back again kind of elements. The mirroring here is less topographical than the other pieces, but the contrary motion and mirrored fingerings persist, as does the strict use of the intervals at hand. Approx running time is 3 mins 15 secs. A Fun piece for the display of the sound of the piano, and the display of the ability of the player to maintain a flowing 1/8-note triplet motion through many different shades of major and minor, lydian and phrygian . Audiences could NOT get enough of it, and he could not bear to play it one more time! Such is Fame and Success. Well, we Normal Humans have had to look at the traditional setting of it, in two grand staves, with enough double-accidentals to blind a scribe, and try to emulate The Master from that pirate's treasure map. No longer. Here is a single-grand staff setting, with only the most minor modifications to accommodate the average hand, and spellings that show the true nature of the chords. The single best aspect of our setting here is the Total Elimination of the crossed-hand octaves throughout. When I realized these were only three or four-note triads, and not a pile of interlocking harmonies, I determined to make things clearer, for myself, and other players. The low notes all correspond to Rachmaninoff's bassline, except for one passage near the end. Only TWO octave doublings have been removed to make a smaller leap from the former lower grand staff to the upper. When I was a young student, this sort of music was baffling to my eyes, but not my ears. Now we can all see it and play it for what it is, an early masterwork, based on S.R.'s training in harmony from the Moscow Conservatory. A note can be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and even 9th of some chord. They are all on display here, with a nice summation at the end, in quietude. MBB.

The trombone is an oft-neglected melody and solo instrument in the jazz ensemble, and here is a trombone section feature on the melody, with an improvised solo as well for the lead player. The saxes and trumpets also have soli sections, in harmony. The trombone melody is unison. Solo sections are broken up such that one player does the A-A, and another doe the B section and the final A. Sorry, no SampleSolo for the trumpet, but all others have one. The music is a riff on Am-Bb7, with a modal bridge that uses the parallel and relative majors of A minor. A nice little structural element! Rhythm section Uni-Part, Straight-through no D.S. al coda layout, and piano voicings and chord symbols make this as playable and clear for student, recreational, and pro ensembles. Ranges are conservative without being boring. Running time is approx. 4 mins 45 secs. MBB.

Fur Elise has gotten a bit of a new lease on life in concert, as Valentina Lisitsa has played it as an encore on some high-profile concerts. The standard rendition of this piece is in 3/8 time, and uses a fair amount of R-L hand substitution on the melody. Our version is in 3/4, a more modern setting for a time signature, with fewer dots and flags, and uses NO hand-substitutions in that famous repeated half-step. Why bother, say the Technical Elves, behind the scenes. I agree, and thus, this setting is a straight-across figure for the RH only, with the upper final note as the sole LH kicker. Also, in much of Beethoven's music, there is a technical disconnect between some sections, openings being easy and later contrasting sections being an order of technical magnitude more difficult. So, the tempo reminder at the beginning of each section is meant to insure that the easy part does not go fast, and the hard part does not go slower. As your technical level rises, so can the pace of the whole piece, but not until then. Enjoy! MBB .

Here is a spritely carol with a very specific set of musical parameters that belies its flowing sound. The right hand melody, so familiar to many of us, with its melismatic phrases, is set in fifths and fourths ONLY. the accompaniment, in the left hand bass, is octaves and fifths, filled in at the top of the bottom with a whole step. A very restricted set of materials, yet they complement the song in its simplicity and verve. This arrangement is NOT as suitable for vocal accompaniment as the others in the series. Melismas in 5ths, not easy to sing along with. But, fun to play! MBB.
