English • German • French.Tippett’s decision to extract the four Ritual Dances from his opera 'The Midsummer Marriage' as a self-contained concert suite reflects the fact that the medium of dance was always present in his conception of the opera. From the start, there was to be an interaction within the opera between the real world and the world of mythology, partly Greek, partly Celtic. This mythological element culminates, in the finished opera, in the 'Ritual Dances' of Acts 2 and 3. Tippett himself described his opera as ‘a kind of elaborate 'L’après midi d’un faune’, in which the 'Ritual Dances' display a powerful sexual energy, though of a very different kind from Debussy’s voluptuous langour. Composition of The Midsummer Marriage occupied Tippett for six years from 1946 to 1952. The first performance of the Ritual Dances as a concert suite was given in Basel on 13 February 1953 by the Basel Kammerorchester conducted by Paul Sacher, and preceded the premiere of the complete opera by two years. Today the Ritual Dances rival the Concerto for Double String Orchestra (ETP 1331) as Tippett’s most widely-performed orchestral work.

Campra's sacred music includes 5 books of petits motets, the polyphonic Missa ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, the Messe de mort, and a large number of grands motets. All these works demonstrate the composer's mastery of theatrical conventions - descriptive instrumental preludes and dramatically representative scenes are not uncommon - and their style is imbued with the worldly, fashionable Italianate spirit of the time. The Messe de mort is today one of the more frequently performed of Campra's sacred works and it is also one of the most enigmatic scores of his entire output. The occasion of its commission and first performance are unknown. Montagnier, however, proposes the hypothesis that the Messe de mort was expressly composed for the memorial service for Philippe II duc d'Orléans (Campra's patron since 1697) who died at Versailles on 4 February 1723.

Er hat mit der Komposition wahrscheinlich 1825 begonnen und die Symphonie 1826 der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien gewidmet, die sie aber aufgrund ihres Schwierigkeitsgrades nicht aufführen konnte. Erst 1828 gab Schubert sie nach kurzer Überarbeitung in Druck. Das Charakteristische an dieser Symphonie ist ihr Beginn: Die ersten acht Takte der einprägsamen Melodie werden nur von zwei Hörnern vorgetragen - ein Klangbild, das für den Beginn einer Symphonie bis dahin untypisch war. Ein weiteres Charakteristikum ist die später so bezeichnete totale Durchführung, d. h. die thematisch-motivische Arbeit findet nicht nur im Durchführungssatz, sondern von Anfang an statt. Damit ergibt sich über alle Formteile hinweg ein motivisch-logischer Zusammenhang.
