The programme migrated to TV, where it ran from 1962-75, and was called Television Top of the Form. This setting is presented here in a version for solo mezzo-soprano voice and piano. The piece aims to give appropriate musicial expression to the text. Several key ideas, motifs and chords recur, and are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like manner. The piece focuses on harmonies with added augmented fourths, reminiscent of Messiaen, in an attempt to express joy or even ecstasy. The influence of Berio (Folksongs) can be seen in the doubling, colouring, and sustaining of the vocal line by the piano, creating an 'accidental' form of harmony, as well as supporting the singer. The piece is appropriate for most standards of singer and pianist. This piece is essentially a set of textural variations on a folk-like theme, the tune appearing a fourth higher each time. The work employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.
