It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. The vocal line, for any solo voice or for unison voices, retains the folk tune contour throughout, within the range of low D to high D. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The 2-part SA and 4-part SATB versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer are also available via Sheet Music Plus. All the verses, choruses and breaks are present except the fade out, which is replaced by a defined end to the piece (so the audience knows when to applaud!)This arrangement sits somewhere between intermediate and advanced intermediate, with each of the parts having music in more than one voice from time to time to make a fuller sound.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Peter Cetera. I've changed the key slightly so the music fits the guitar neck better and the modulation in the reprise is in a familiar key for the players.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. But there are plenty of opportunities in the phrasing to make this ballad absolutely magical.This piece featured in the film Karate Kid II, so you can get your chops in, either on the guitar or in a Karate competition...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts.
