In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The 13th song, Ch'io non t'ami begins as follows: That I do not believe that you are my life and I yours.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. This selection, Carol of the Bells, also known as Ring, Christmas Bells, is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services. Carol of the Bells' was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, Ring, Christmas Bells, an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Vorrei baciarti has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to keep it to 5 parts. Vorrei baciarti is a duet for two contraltos, taken by parts 2 and 3 in this setting. The title translate as I want to kiss you, so typifies the kind of love songs that Monteverdi was writing. The poet is singing these words to his lover Phyllis, so we can probably assume that he is Amyntas. In the poem he is deciding where to plant his first kiss. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

I arranged Ghostbusters for my 7th grade jazz band which is just a piano, alto sax, tenor sax, and trumpet, but I doubled some of the parts so you could use this for a larger group as well with more instrumentation. This will also work with just piano, sax, and trumpet... you will just be missing some of the harmony.  Some of the rhythms are tricky for elementary, but since it's a familiar tune, you can teach it by rote or could easily use this piece to introduce reading more complicated dotted rhythms. It's also a good piece for more advanced ensembles that need an easy familiar tune to throw into their repertoire or playlist.
