Combining motor ostinati with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. This orchestration of the piece includes parts for what I have come to know as a ‘mixed ability school ensemble’ i.e. a selection of instruments that you might typically find being taught in high schools both in London and nationally. The idea behind this was to put primary school musicians alongside older (sometimes as much as 10 years older) musicians from high schools to act both as inspiration and role models. 'AsCent’ for mixed ability school ensemble was first performed on Saturday 1st July 2017 by 76 musicians including 34 primary school children from the London Borough of Brent under the baton of the composer.
