Soprano voice and piano - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.9230-E Composed by Juliana Hall. 10 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #9230-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.9230-E). English.Peace on Earth was commissioned by Richard Lee and Karen Lerner as a gift for their daughter, Katherine Lerner Lee, a beautiful soprano.  My husband and I had known Richard and Karen from our time as fellow graduate students at the Yale School of Music; Richard had studied composition and Karen piano, both very talented musicians and lovely people, so I was touched to be asked and very happy to write Peace on Earth as a gift for their daughter Katie, who was graduating from Oberlin Conservatory.  Katie patiently waited out the coronavirus pandemic and on April 16, 2023 she and pianist Nomin Samdan premiered Peace on Earth on her masters degree recital at the Bard College Conservatory, where she was wrapping up her studies in the Vocal Arts Program.  She wrote about Peace on Earth in her recital program notes that, “Hall responds to Williams’ catalog of constellations through slowly shifting harmonies and smooth, swung rhythms. The composer imagines the night sky as though one is dreaming it, ‘...whether it’s really up there above us or just taking place within the sleeping person’s soul.’  Through this luscious song, we are invited to daydream collectively and to come into a more unified consciousness.â€.

Instrumental Solo,Oboe d'Amore,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549521 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and individual part. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #3504479. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549521). Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 9 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital or church meditation. Very effective on the Oboe d'Amore! Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic-era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy), and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1121330 By Queen Latifah. By Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Arranged by Kathleen McGuire. Blues,Broadway,Musical/Show. Octavo. 8 pages. Kathleen McGuire #722501. Published by Kathleen McGuire (A0.1121330). This soulful anthem from the musical (and film) HAIRSPRAY ends in an uplifting climax that brings audience members to their feet. The choir parts are not difficult to learn. A strong Broadway-style soloist is needed (preferably an alto or tenor) to sell the song, delivering a message of resilience and triumph in the face of racism. Although the musical is set in the 1950s, the theme is highly relevant today in the climate of Black Lives Matter. To add to the style of the piece, bass guitar and drums are recommended (easy to ad lib from the score). You can find a recording of the TTBB version of this arrangement on the album DIVA'S REVENGE performed by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. (Also available: TTBB).

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787233 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. 11 pages. Burke & Bagley #48413. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787233). The Second Suite from Razumov derives from the second act of Razumov, Greg Bartholomew’s chamber opera based on the novel Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad. The opera tells the story of a young Russian, Razumov, who is caught up in the consequences when a fellow university student, Victor Haldin, assassinates a government minister. Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Recorder - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.999537 Composed by Antonio Vivaldi. Arranged by Thomas Pickering. Baroque. Recorder Ensemble. 33 pages. Thomas Pickering #6274799. Published by Thomas Pickering (A0.999537). Spring from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, arranged for 6 Recorders (SAATBCb). The Four Seasons is very well known, but less well known is that Vivaldi used four sonnets (allegedly written by himself) as a descriptive basis for each concerto. Each movement follows the narrative of the sonnet, and in this arrangement I focused particularly on the way Vivaldi tells the story of the sonnet through the music. I have spent a long time carefully adapting this violin concerto for a recorder ensemble, and have provided ossias to cater for the less experienced player. This should be accessible to any amateur recorder ensemble who is looking for a challenge.
