Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful� was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,� and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,� “Pax Aeternam� is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.� I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.I created a cello transcription for a performance with Sara Male, my partner in Duo Chiaroscuro. This seemed appropriate, since “Still Waters Running Deep,� one of our signature pieces, is a transcription of the slow movement of Barbara’s bassoon sonata, created at our request by the composer.

She composed pieces for piano, concertos, quartets, and was known for her scientific studies on the hand techniques of the Piano.Her cello concerto in F major, dedicated to Jules Delsart, is a rather unknown gem to the cello community. While arrangements of her manuscript for Cello and Orchestra have been performed, her personal arrangment of the concerto for Cello and Piano is not as well-known. Following the manuscript from the Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire of Strasbourg (BNU), this edition features a similar 1st and 3rd movement, with a novel 2nd movement in a similar style as compared to her orchestra version. These are two charming dances taken from a collection entitled Recueil de danseries, contenant presque toutes sortes de danses (“Collection of dances, containing almost all kinds of dances�) published in Antwerp in 1583 by Pierre Phalèse Jnr (c.1545-1629). He was continuing the work of his father Pierre Phalèse the Elder (1510-1575) the most important publisher in the Low Countries during the 16th century and who published his First Book of Dances in Leuven in 1571. The Antwerp publication of 1583 contains about half the dances from the original 1571 edition, together with some new titles, making a total of about seventy numbers.The 1583 collection contains a large selection of gaillardes, almandes and bransles which were all popular courtly dances of the time. The lively and well-known piece entitled Ungaresca appears on page 24 of the original publication. The drone accompaniment that Phalèse provides suggests the sound of the peasant bagpipes. The name Ungaresca is a term used outside Hungary to denote a dance in the Hungarian style and this particular one probably first appeared in a 1578 dance collection for viol consort - Mainerio's Primo libro de balli. As a result, the music is sometimes attributed to Mainerio.In this arrangement, Ungaresca is paired with the delightful Almande Poussinghe which appears on page 16 of the original. This wonderful music of the 16th century still speaks to us today and this arrangement would be an ideal concert item, playable by virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments with optional percussion and keyboard parts. The optional keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. Some minor changes have been made to the inner parts to facilitate performance.This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two.
