These ‘Three Equali’ are amongst the few pieces that were written for trombone ensemble by a well- known composer, and therefor they are very important pieces for the trombone repertoire. This particular edition is different from the ones that most trombone players know. First of all, it contains a score for male choir. And secondly, it is transposed a major second down. The reason for this is that the original version is too high for the male voices. The version for male choir was added to the first and the last movement by Ignaz Seyfried, a friend of Beethoven. To make the words fit to the music, he had to be quite free with interpreting the rhythmical structure that Beethoven composed. It is debatable if the vocal and instrumental version should be performed all together or alternating with each other. According to the notes about Beethoven’s funeral (where the first and last movement were performed), the voices and instruments were alternating during this performance. The second movement was performed on a later moment, but the link between the instrumental version (with text by Frans Grillparzer) was not made. I have taken the freedom to put these two together in this score, and transposed it one major second down to make it fit smoothly in between the other two movements. The first and last movement also contained a text in Latin, but since the second movement was only available in German, I also used the German texts for the other movements.

It's called 'Setting the Watch' and is inspierd by the Ripon Hornblower with the tradition going back over a thousand years to Saxon times when Viking raids were common occurrences and people lived in fear of their property, livestock and even lives being lost in night-time attacks. In 886, the English King was Alfred the Great and he made it his mission to visit his people bringing a message of safety and stability. In Ripon he granted the people a Royal Charter and gave them a symbolic horn as a gift, advising them that they should be always alert to the dangers of invaders. The people of Ripon decided to employ a night watchman that they called a “wakemen� to patrol from dusk until dawn ready to sound the horn gifted by the King should he spot any trouble approaching. For further reassurance, the wakeman sounded the horn at each of the four corners of the market place at 9pm every night to let the people know that he was on duty and they could sleep easily. This sounding of the horn at 9pm became known as setting the watch.

He commissioned me to write a medley of traditional hymns in which he and his wife (my mom) could play together for church services. I was sort of taken aback by this request since I am mostly known as a freelance trumpet player around the Minneapolis area and not necessarily an arranger. Nevertheless, I thought I would give it a go. I am happy to say that this project was extremely fun and satisfying to work on. Not only did it give me a chance to stretch muscles I haven't used for a couple of years, but it has given me the opportunity to praise and worship God in a new way. I hope that through this arrangement, others may also be able to worship God through the gift of music. This arrangement is a medley between three different traditional hymns: ​What a Friend We Have In Jesus, Jesus Loves Me, a​nd ​I Know That My Redeemer Lives. ​These were chosen by my dad since these are some of his favorite hymns.
