Symphonie fantastique is a piece of program music that tells the story of an artist gifted with a lively imagination who has poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of hopeless, unrequited love. Berlioz provided his own preface and program notes for each movement of the work. Convinced that his love is spurned, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of narcotic, while too weak to cause his death, plunges him into a heavy sleep accompanied by the strangest of visions. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a final thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. Berlioz claimed to have written the fourth movement in a single night, reconstructing music from an unfinished project, the opera Les francs-juges. The movement begins with timpani sextuplets in thirds, for which he directs: The first quaver of each half-bar is to be played with two drumsticks, and the other five with the right hand drumsticks. The movement proceeds as a march filled with blaring horns and rushing passages, and scurrying figures that later show up in the last movement. NOTES: - The two timpani part can be played by only the 2 pairs of timpani. - Measure 93 and 100: Clarinet 1, 2 and 3 play one octave lower as written.

German • Danish.Iwan Müller, clarinettist, composer and reformer of the clarinet, was born to German parents in Reval (Russia). One of his first jobs was in St. Petersburg. In 1809 he went to Paris where he worked as an instrument maker, amongst other things. In 1812 he presented his new clarinet with 13 round keys, the ‘clarinette omnitonique‘, which could be played in all keys, to a panel. Although the initial evaluation was negative, the innovation was implemented in the coming years. In 1820 Müller returned to Russia and then to Germany (Kassel, Berlin). He performed concerts in various countries and finally became a court musician in Bückeburg. Iwan Müller’s skill as a composer is revealed in both the melody and harmony of Le rêve (The Dream). The piece was published in 1845 (plate number 7855).

While Leemans was serving in the Belgian army during World War 1, on a request from his commander he began to write a march, which he did not finish. During World War 2, when the Belgian parachute brigade was formed, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. During one single night Leemans composed this march on themes recalled from his earlier effort. Fourteen pieces for organ, dedicated to a “beloved friend, Fr. Teodoras Brazys,� presents the largest collection of works for this instrument in Naujalis’ oeuvre. Like Naujalis, Brazys was the graduate of the Church Music School in Regensburg. These fourteen preludes for organ appear to be written in expression of deep affinity and gratitude to a like-minded friend who shared similar values. Some of Naujalis’ organ preludes have been included in music collections abroad – by Mieczysław Surzyński in Warsaw and Joseph Joubert in Paris. Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929.A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.

After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

Published by Nicholas Fife (A0.982407).         While attending the University of South Carolina the horn choir performed Robert Pruzin’s arrangement of selections from Mahler’s third symphony. All of the horn students loved it, and we performed it at the Southeast Horn Workshop at Western Carolina University in 2009. When Mr. Pruzin died; the arrangement was lost, so I reproduced his arrangement. After studying the original score I was able to identify the portions of the piece that Mr. Pruzin used.        Mr. Pruzin taught at the UofSC for 35 years, mentoring and inspiring countless young music students. He was the principal horn of the SC Philharmonic and the Augusta Symphony. He was also an artist in residence at the SC Governor’s School for the Arts. Mr. Pruzin always had a deep admiration for Mozart, so he started a program called Bring Mozart Alive!. He would dress as a court musician from the time of Mozart and performed for thousands of elementary school students.        I have wonderful memories from my time at the UofSC, and that includes performing this arrangement. It is my hope that this arrangement continues to be enjoyed by horn students for many years to come. Thank you for everything, Mr. Pruzin.        Gustav Mahler finished writing his third symphony in 1896. It is his longest composition. Performance times usually range from 95 to 110 minutes. This arrangement contains portions of the first and final movements of the work.
