In addition to writing many works for the flute (he wrote over 60 works for this instrument, he was also one of the first composers to write for the saxophone. He was an Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-ArtsThis work was used as an examination piece at the Paris Conservatory in the class of Adolphe Sax, to whom it is dedicated. Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Euphonium Septet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Euphonium Septet, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (40 pages) written in Treble Clef. There is also a version written in Bass Clef if you prefer. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Euphonium Septet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. His numerous compositions and particularly his 'singspiels' (song-plays) were very popular with the audience: Ditters von Dittersdorf's comedy 'Der Apotheker und der Doktor' even outdid Mozart's 'Le nozze di Figaro' in contemporary popularity in 1786. In 1766 Dittersdorf wrote the Violin Concerto in C major while being in service as leader of a music band in Großwardein, a post he had accepted in succession to Michael Haydn. The solo part was probably played by the composer himself at the first performance. The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra).
