Carl Tausig received his first musical education from his father – composer and student of Thalberg – Aloys Tausig. At the age of 14 he went to Weimar to study with Franz Liszt, with whom he soon became a favourite. After only two years, Liszt sent him to Richard Wagner in Zurich, with a letter of recommendation. He became one of his most loyal followers. As a successful pianist, Tausig also made a name for himself with his virtuoso piano arrangements. The arrangement of ‘Siegmunds Liebesgesang’ (Winter storms gave way to the blissful moon) from the Valkyrie was published by Schott as early as 1863 (plate number 17307), several years before the first performance of the opera. Tausig died in 1871 from typhoid, at the age of only 29. The epitaph on his gravestone was written by Wagner: ‘Ripe for Death’s harvest, / too early to pluck / the shyly sprouting fruits of life / in the fleeting bloom of spring-- / was it thy fate, was it thy bourn-- / thy fate and thy daring both we must mourn.’.

He wrote several operas including Chanson de mai and Ninette et Ninon (both Paris, 1873), Le Contrast (ib., 1889), and Monseigneur Scapin [Le Progrhs artistique] (Nantes, 1891) as well as the ballet La Folie espagnole (1874). He wrote several symphonic works, including the Overtures Torquato Tasso and Miguel Cervantes, a symphonic poem with chorus La Vision des croisies, works for chamber ensemble and for the piano.

Ernesto Lecuona was born 1895 in Cuba.  He began piano lessons at 5 years of age and developed into a virtuoso pianist and internationally celebrated composer.  In 1928 he composed Suite Andalucía, a six-movement piano piece portraying the people and places of the Andalusia region of southern Spain.  Two of those pieces eventually achieved tremendous popularity as standalone songs:  #2, “Andalucia� and #6, “Malagueña.�  Lecuona had composed both in ¾ time.  Salvador Tutti Camarata reframed “Andalucia� in 4/4, Al Stillman provided English lyrics and the song was given a new title, “The Breeze and I.�  Jimmy Dorsey’s big band recorded it in 1940 with the vocal by Bob Eberly.  It was hugely popular, lasting nine weeks on the Billboard magazine chart and peaking at #2.  Fifteen years later, Caterina Valente recorded both “The Breeze and I� and “Malagueña� to great success.     This arrangement opens in A-flat major with Trumpets, Horn and Tuba laying down a Latin beat and the Trombone playing an opening lick.  After the introduction, Trombone and Trumpets take turns with the melody, while Horn and Tuba provide variety and accents.  On the second time through, the key changes to E-flat major and begins with a Trumpets-and-lower-brass fanfare.  The melody repeats, but this time with a different take.  Horn and Trombone take turns with melody and counter melody, then Trumpets take over.  After several cascade effects, the tune reaches its end and Trumpets play an extended version of Trombone’s lick from the introduction.  The group then repeats the final 16 bars of the tune and winds up with an extended ending treatment.  Trombone once again contributes its opening lick, and the arrangement fades away . . . all to a Latin beat.  Enjoy!     Time signature is 2/2 and suggested tempo is 72 BPM, which is maintained all the way through.  There are two instances of a one-bar change to 3/2.  The fanfare at Section C contains a measure and a half of 16th notes.  All notes are well within the normal playing range of the five instruments.     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. He spent seven weeks on the score only to find that just four songs (Blah, Blah, Blah; Delicious; Katinkitschka; Somebody from Somewhere), a five-minute Dream Sequence and one minute from a six-minute orchestral sequence called New York Rhapsody would be incorporated in the film. When he went back to New York in February 1931, George had decided to use the material from the six-minute sequence to work into a concert piece and had sketched some of it. Some of the material was jettisoned: the Manhattan Rhapsody opens with the main romantic theme in 6/8 time arranged for piano and solo cello. The rest of the film sequence was radically rearranged and rescored. Gershwin completed the fourteen-minute piece by May. The new work was titled Rhapsody in Rivets during his sketching, but later he could not decide between New York Rhapsody and Manhattan Rhapsody. George Gershwin settled on Second Rhapsody.
