Will we meet again by the river of life?” Lowry assured her from Revelation 22:1 they they would. Then, later that afternoon he wrote both the words and the music of Shall We Gather at the River.The arrangement may serve as well as an early goal for a progressing piano student as for an intermediate to advanced player this coming Sunday.The intro announces the tune and calls the first line of the chorus to mind. This arrangement for trombone quintet features the first and second trombone with the melody.  The fourth trombone is largely independent, providing rhythmic motion in the phrases. The arrangement has similar range for the first and second trombones, and is set in a comfortable range for bass trombone.  Chords are available in the bass trombone part and lyrics are in the first trombone part so this can be used as the basis for expanded solos.  Irving Berlin emigrated to the United States in 1893 at the age of 5 with his parents, fleeing Jewish persecution in Russia. He died in 1989 with over 1500 songs to his credit.The published version of the song, A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody, was an excerpt from a longer version used in the Ziegfeld Follies. It was the hit song of the 1919 Follies and became the theme song. It was also used frequently in Miss America pageants prior to 1955. Berlin believed this song was in the top 5 of the hundreds of songs he wrote. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover.
