He kindly critiqued and encouraged my early compositional efforts (I was 14 at the time), and they were by far the best composition lessons I ever had. His enthusiasm for the music of Shostakovich and Stravinsky was particularly infectious. At our first meeting I brought along three piano pieces which were very much inspired by Rachmaninoff. He asked me to go home and write three  short characteristic piano pieces for him. When I returned and played him these three (very Shostakovich-ian) dances he was much more approving!

McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room, and upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. As he put it, For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it. I have arranged the melody here as a solo trombone feature which has been successfully performed in concert many times.

Titl had been the military bandmaster in Prague since 1835. In 1840 he was hired as the successor of Heinrich Proch to the theater in Josefstadt, where he stayed until 1846. From 1850 until his retirement in 1870 he worked at the Burgtheater as Kapellmeister. As a composer, Titl created numerous songs and stage music for both of the above theaters. His greatest success was the Singspiel Der Zauberschleier by Franz Xaver Told, which contained the song A Wirtsg'schäft, which was extremely popular at the time, is really not bad.In 1898 the Titlgasse in Vienna-Hietzing was named after him. Titl's Serenade was composed for flute and horn with orchestra or piano accompaniment. With a lilting Bel Canto style in 12/8, its lyric melody features passages of filigree work that will excite and challenge the musician's technical as well as expressive capabilities. The piece is ideal for contest or recital for the intermediate player. This edition for flute, horn and orchestra is based in 2 sources , a set or parts published in 1896 by the French publisher E. GALLET plate n. G.5688 and a manuscript of the parts from Austrian National Library and has been carefully arranged and edited by James Strauss. All the discrepancies between the sources were corrected and for the very first time in a Full Score format.

The melody has now been traced back to an English Ballad (Roud #5089). In the Dorian mode, the sixth scale degree is lowered in the harmony some of the time. Arranged for Lever or Pedal Harps, dynamics and pedal changes are clearly marked. Lever Harp I will set one flat at the beginning and leave it on throughout the entire piece.

Although he produced sacred music for Anglican services, sometime during the 1570s he became a Roman Catholic and wrote Catholic sacred music later in his life. The melody is attributed to Lutheran Hymnist, Johann Crüger and was used in three J.S. Bach chorales but the most common version we hear today was harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God. This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13: How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question  of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!
