He was a child prodigy of the piano, and a great admirer of Chopin. His piano and orchestral compositions are finely crafted, the latter uniting aesthetics with religion. Both are naturally laced with the Russian temperament, and show an embrace of the harmonic revolution of his time. The prelude (Op.9 No.1) is an early piece exhibiting Scriabin's melodic flair. It's form is a kind of condensed sonata – ABA with a coda. The 'B' section of roving, moderately distant, harmonies, and the 'coda' with its binding bass line are equal to the theme, as they should be. I am very fond of the tremolo style, and here it highlights the marvelous counterpoint of the piece.

Satie also found inspiration in Greek antiquity and French literature, most notably his Socrate. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) tragedy Andromaque (1667) inspired these duets. Racine took his characters from Greek and Roman stories and adapted or created new situations for them in accordance with baroque fascination with neo-classicism in literature. Andromaque is a love quadrangle in which all who love die or go insane. Only the prisoner-queen Andromaque, who is incapable of love, survives. Andromaque, icy cold, rejects amorous advances from her captor Phyrrus. She plots her survival, trying desperately to save her infant son Astyanax from the Greek ambassador Oreste who would have her Trojan line finished off for good. The baby Astyanax sleeps silently, unaware of the deadly drama surrounding him. Does he nap peacefully? Or does he dream, like his mother, of revenge for the death of his conquered father, the great Trojan warrior king Hector? Phyrrus awkwardly tries to sweet-talk his captive Andromaque into marriage. Oreste is torn between duty and love for usury Hermione. Her broken promises and final rejection affect him profoundly. Oreste goes insane upon learning of her death.

In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) wrote this as a piece for piano (4-hands) in the 1880s after attending a performance of Tristan and Isolde in Munich. Chabrier had been moved to tears by Richard Wagner's romantic music drama, but when Chabrier returned home to Paris, he wrote this burlesque, a pastiche of the various themes from the opera. It was a curious thing to do, because instead of writing a tribute to Wagner's masterpiece, it was as if he instead squirted Wagner in the face with a seltzer bottle. Wagner's champion, Hans von Bülow, became enraged when he heard Chabrier perform the parody, but Wikipedia reports that Francis Poulenc described Souvenirs de Munich as irresistibly funny, where Wagner's principal themes appear with false beards and fake moustaches.This arrangement for wind band is greatly simplified from the original piano piece to make it more playable. Still, bands will find it a challenge, although instrumentalists and audiences both are certain to enjoy this clever novelty from La Belle �poque.
