Guillaume de Morlaye, (c. 1510-c. 1558) was a French Renaissance-era lutenist, composer, and music publisher. He was a pupil of Albert de Rippe and lived and worked in Paris. In 1552 Morlaye received a ten-year license to publish music from Henry II, and between 1553 and 1558 published four lute collections in cooperation with Michel Fezandat, six lute collections compiled by Albert de Rippe, and also lute arrangements of Pierre Certon and Claudin de Sermisy. He also published four books of his own four-course Renaissance guitar compositions from 1552–53, including fantasies and dances, I encourage you to experiment with ornamentation for each piece and make them your own. In his short time on earth, he studied law and theology at the University of Ingolstadt, was a cellist in the Mannheimer Hofkapelle and a composer of at least thirty-four symphonies, thirty concertos and several chamber works. Being a member of the Mannheimer Hofkapelle puts Filtz's compositions clear in the Mannheim school along with fellow composers Franz Xaver Richter, Carl Stamitz, Franz Ignaz Beck, Ignaz Fränzl, and Christian Cannabich. His 6 Symphonies Op. 1 are all scored for strings and continuo and consist of three movements - fast - slow- fast. I can't find a recording of Filtz's Symphony Op.1 No.5 in F major or a modern edition of this work. I do hope that you will find this work interesting enough to play and perform. If you do perform it, I would love to hear your recording.

As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

Sun and Moon is the third of the songs from Four Songs of Lucretius.  All are from his epic poem The Nature of Things or Rerum Natura. In it he expresses the view of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. In this song he says that there are many worlds - this is not the only one, and nature is not controlled by any gods. Nature is free, and is able to do everything herself.

Published by OTBM (A0.990610). This is a nice little march (quickstep) C.S. Grafulla wrote possibly before the American Civil War. I know he is famous for his Washington Greys but the fact is that he wrote around 20 other marches (quicksteps) The original is a piano piece I discovered through the Library of Congress. The actual original sheet music may now reside in The Duke Collection which was on loan to the LOC at the time I did this arrangement. Like many Brass Quintets the melody is mostly in the trumpets. However, the lower brass do get a piece of the melody from time to time. Probably around two minutes. 102 measures. F and B-flat major. Probably a grade 3. Highest trumpet pitch is g on the top of the staff.

This is a gospel song sung at many church and secular events for over 20 years. This inspirational song can be performed in a wide range of venues in or outside places of worship. A traditional encore begins at measure 14, beat 3. It goes to the 2nd Ending and continues to the end of the piece; no repeats. The author, Richard Smallwood, is quoted to say, It’s a song that gives praise to God, transcending church walls and going places I never thought it would go, circa 2015.  The arranger is Brian Leverett. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Wayne State University and has now retired from teaching Elementary and Middle School Band in the Detroit Public Schools. He also has been an avid member of handbell choirs for twenty years.
