Hopewell Farmscapes Third Movement from Hopewell Suite for Trumpet Ensemble by Eddie Lewis Hopewell Suite is a trumpet ensemble composition for four trumpets and two flugelhorns. It was composed in 2016 using inspirations Eddie Lewis collected while he was in South Africa for the jazz festival in Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape. Hopewell is the name of the farm where Eddie and his wife stayed most of the time while they were in South Africa. The farm is owned by their brother-in-law. While Hopewell Farm was not the first farm Eddie ever visited, it is more common for him to see the farms from outside the fences. As a guest at Hopewell, Eddie had many opportunities to explore the land, accompanying his brother-in-law as he took care of the cattle. Some of this was on foot and sometimes they drove (off road) across the property in a bakkie. The scenes, the smells, the sounds, all of it calls out gladly to welcome you. No wonder that he had devoted himself particularly to the composition of songs, already in his student days in Berlin in the late 1840s. The newly edited 'Ave Maria' was found among the composer's unpublished works. Although it bears the dedication 'Fräulein von Hillebrandt zum 13. September 1862', it was probably created earlier. It is a simple, chordally accompanied song which is quite suitable for liturgical purposes. The piano part may be replaced by an organ.

Have you ever had a dog that was a special, loyal friend? Well, Buster was a black and white pomeranian that will always have a special spot in my family's hearts. He loved to play football with the kids, and he loved to take walks with me. After we had to put him to sleep, I woke up around 1:00 a.m. one morning and wrote this song in memory of Buster. Buster's Walk is a cheerful little piece in 3/4 time, full of rich chords and a haunting melody. It is in the key of F Major, includes some grace notes, arpeggiated chords, lots of helpful fingering, and resembles music from the early 1900's. (I always picture Charlie Chaplin). This makes a great recital piece, or part of your Assisted Living entertainment repertoire. Every time I play Buster's Walk, I can still see him walking beside me with that perky, little smiling face; I hope you can picture him, too. Over 200 years ago, Scottish musician Joshua Campbell wrote a fiddle tune called The Beautifull Town of Glasgow (yes, he meant beautiful, but that's how he spelled it!) in the Georgian era.  I have arranged it here for two flutes, violin, viola and cello.  It goes at quite a lick - after all, it's a dance - and the strings can go wild with their pizzicato!  A few zany trills for the flutes, which they share with the violin at one point, and some off-beat work for everyone.
