He moved to Russia in 1897 to play the trumpet in various groups and to teach music. Böhme wrote 46 known compositions. This sextet was written for brass instruments, and is one of his best-known pieces. It is quite a gem, and I wanted to make it available to other instrumental groups to perform. The entire work is available for purchase, but this selection is the 1st movement of 4 only. Scored for 4 C, alto, and bass flutes. There is an optional cello part that doubles the bass part. It is suitable for intermediate-advanced musicians. Duration: 5.75 minutes.

All great myths take place in legendary places - Mount Olympus, Atlantis, Camelot, Asgard and Cimmeria - the home of the great fictional hero Conan the Barbarian. The text used in this piece comes from a short poem by Robert E. Howard which he wrote while living in Boerne, Texas inspired by the terrain of the hill country. Howard uses incredibly descriptive text to paint the picture of the land of Cimmeria such as sombre hills, gaunt land and woodlands brooding. The verse then switches to the perspective of the narrator who struggles to recall what name was used for him when he existed in this ancient land. In setting this text I aimed to use a dense, sombre harmonic texture to illustrate this hazy memory of a distance place. When the voice of narrator is heard the music switches into a rough, barbaric chant and then back to the dark texture. The use of bassoon and synthesizer layered under the chorus should lend an other-wordly sound to the piece.

The first movement depicts that gallop through the different parts of the countryside. The main motive here being the big main street. He gallops through the flower meadows, the green forrest and the wheatfields. In the second movement our horseman leaves the big street and rides through a birch grove, past a lake and into a small village right past the singing churchgoers before returning to the street in the third movement, where he rides into the big city.
