The second of Bach’s four orchestral suites is actually the one he composed last, in Leipzig around 1739, and is probably the last orchestral music of any kind that he wrote. It is basically a solo flute concerto in the form of a dance suite, and an extraordinarily difficult flute concerto at that. A badinerie is a sort of character piece in 18th-century suites, with no particular dance rhythm or meter. This one has a full measure of the light and lively bantering the title implies, which has made it also popular with jazz arrangers. The Duration is approx. 1.32 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.

I have been a huge fan of his music and piano playing since I heard the album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968). Assisted by Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, Chick was in absolutely rare form on that seminal recording!!! As a tribute to him and a in memoriam to his musicianship, I wrote these movements for solo piano inspired by his compositions in the album Children's Songs (1984). Corea's Children's Songs is a suite of twenty solo piano pieces, each lasting between 1 to 2 minutes. These are truly little gems of composition in miniature, like the Chopin Preludes. But every time I hear them I always felt that these nice little pieces, at least to my ears, always came up short. A lot of them seem to end in mid-air. In my humble opinion, they needed development. But that is of course coming from the mouth of a classical composer, me. LOL!!! Nevertheless, in this tribute, I have taken some ideas from the original Corea songs and reinvented them in my own fashion. You will detect a thing or two from Chick, but mostly it's TOL music. He is mainly known for his operettas, of which the most successful and best known is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe). Lehár was also associated with the operatic tenor Richard Tauber, who sang in many of his operettas, beginning with a revival of his 1910 operetta Zigeunerliebe in 1920 and then Frasquita [de] in 1922, in which Lehár once again found a suitable post-war style.   He died aged 78 in 1948 in Bad Ischl, near Salzburg, and was buried there. His younger brother Anton became the administrator of his estate, promoting the popularity of Franz Lehár's music.This very pleasant brass band arrangement by Denis Wright was adapted for a brass quintet and percussion to be enjoyed.

In his short time on earth, he studied law and theology at the University of Ingolstadt, was a cellist in the Mannheimer Hofkapelle and a composer of at least thirty-four symphonies, thirty concertos and several chamber works. Being a member of the Mannheimer Hofkapelle puts Filtz's compositions clear in the Mannheim school along with fellow composers Franz Xaver Richter, Carl Stamitz, Franz Ignaz Beck, Ignaz Fränzl, and Christian Cannabich. His 6 Symphonies Op. 1 are all scored for strings and continuo and consist of three movements - fast - slow- fast. I can't find a recording of Filtz's Symphony Op.1 No.5 in F major or a modern edition of this work. I do hope that you will find this work interesting enough to play and perform. If you do perform it, I would love to hear your recording.

Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..
