Five of the six pieces are dedicated to musician colleagues; all flautists except Walter the percussionist. The sixth is to myself, perhaps a portait of the artist as a young boy. These compositions, however, are not really meant to be portaits, just pieces dedicated to people I work with, and to some extent inspired by how I see them, so I have called them Sketches. The Sketches offer short expositions of themes which I hope will be enjoyable to play and to listen to. They offer some technical challenges for the flautist but are mostly in a 'medium difficulty' range, in attractive jazz/pop styles.

Silent Guns of Sacrifice and Fortitude for clarinet and percussion was composed in commemoration of Fort Negley in Nashville, Tennessee.  Fort Negley was a significant fixture during the US Civil War, particularly in regards to the Battle of Nashville.  While Nash was researching Fort Negley, he discovered an article that described it as silent guns of fortitude, thus the title. This work holds its significance in the unique instrumentation used as well as the rhythm. Since the piece is written for clarinet and African percussion, specifically tom-toms and conga drum, rhythm is highly emphasized.  The piece has a standard slow-fast-slow-fast movement scheme. The first and third movements are slow and the second and last movements are faster and have a dance-like feel to them. The final movement in particular was influenced by a song from the Boys Choir of Kenya.

As a teenager, I was definitely exposed to a fair amount of their music for some reason. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the horn.This is great for university students and professionals... maybe even high school students. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. This one has a kit part included, which isn't necessary to perform this quartet, but might make it easier if a quartet to perform it with drums if they wanted to.The melody gets passed around a bit so it's fun and interesting for everyone. Score, parts and cover arts included. I hope someone out there tries this arrangement and has fun!
