Here is a beautiful, simple advent song I wrote to serve churches through the season of Advent, particularly during the candle lighting portion of each Sunday the weeks leading up to Christmas. I recommend singing verse 1 on week 1, verse 1 and 2 on week 2, and so on, but you can also just use a different verse each week depending on your service needs and time constraints. There are recordings available for each of the weeks of Advent on all streaming platforms as of November 1, 2024, in case that is helpful to your service preparation or to choirs who are learning the song. 

This version is in C Major, with a vocal range of C4-A4, a very comfortable range for congregational singing. Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site, is a full piano vocal accompaniment version and a piano solo that is perfect for a prelude or postlude any time this song is used congregationally, to tie the whole service together muscially.

Written in the style of classic Christmas carols with fun, memorable melody and lyrics, this new Christmas song will quickly become a part of your caroling tradition. By and large, Christmas music is either sacred or secular -- about Jesus, Mary, the shepherds and angels or about presents and parties and mistletoe. We live them both simultaneously. This carol represents that, with the first verse being a patter of Christmas excitement and the second more lyrical focusing on the advent of the Savior. Then, just as in life, they are sung together, complimenting each other. This song has the potential to become a regular part of Christmas carol canon sung by millions around the world.

* Perfect for school or church Christmas concerts.
* Great for families around the fireplace or out caroling.
* Bells/Chimes add a beautiful touch but it can also be performed with just piano and voices or even a capella. I have even enjoyed singing to guitar or ukulele.
* Written to be sung by two groups, however, there is a cut version (explained in print) that does not require splitting. It can be sung straight through without overlapping the verses.
* Some harmony parts are indicated in the vocal line. Of course you can sing the melody in unison all the way through, but there are ample opportunities to break out into fun 2,3 and (in some places) 4-part harmonies. Up to you.

This arrangement for four octaves of handbells begins with a Singing Bell technique, using a wooden dowel around the rim of the bell to create a droning, singing sound.
It's highly suggested that the music be printed out in colour, as the melody notes are indicated in red to make it easier to know what to bring out.
Two endings are included: the original, familiar ending as well as an alternate ending that hints at... [not telling!]
This crowd-pleaser is guaranteed to bring a smile.

The Navy Hymn, also known as “Eternal Father, Strong to Save�, holds a special place in the hearts of seafaring men and women, particularly in the American Navy and the royal navies of the British Commonwealth. In1879: Rear Admiral Charles Jackson Train, a Naval Academy graduate, was stationed at the Academy in charge of the Midshipman Choir. He initiated the practice of concluding each Sunday’s Divine Services with the singing of the first verse of this hymn. Thus, it became a cherished tradition at the Naval Academy and eventually throughout the entire Navy.

Instrumental arrangement of my setting of Christmas song - being a meditation on finding the Christ child within oneself - the poem is by Audrey Vaughan. 

I sought him where the marble shone
and rang with singing echoes
to the hurrying prelates' feet
and found him not

I sought him where the golden glow
and painted heav'n-eyed saints adorn 
the sleeping altars
and found him not

I sought him where all nature's beauty burned
with autumn leaves afire
with death against the long blue sky
and found him not 

I sought him down the stone sett streets 
dull beneath the misty rain 
which closed the surrounding hills
and found him not

I sought him in the eyes of strangers
bright with giving thoughts
and in the hearts of friends
but found him not

I sought him
him whom I loved
in ev'ry thing I loved
in my own heart's loving
but this night I found him not

but still I sought him
this gurgling boy of joy, but where?

the dark sky all above and round me
like a suffocating empty cloak
took time away
my thoughts away
my search away

and the peace of emptiness of self

The First Noel was first published in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both were edited by William Sandys.

The song also was arranged,edited and with extra lyrics written by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God.

Originally the First Noel melody consists of one musical phrase repeated twide,followed by a refrain which is a variation on that phrase.

Also,the First Nowell is usually performed in a 4-part hymn arrangement by the English composer John Stainer.first published in his Carols,New and Old in 1871.

Today,this public domain work type of musical arrangement makes possible to include 9 repeated but uniquely different among each other of variations in total in the whole song with the difficulty level and intensity increased as the number of variation is passed over one by one.

The song format now is offered for Singing in Chinese (??).
