SKU: A0.1195453

Composed by S. Rachmaninov. Arranged by Alessandro Macrì. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Film/TV. 11 pages. Music Macri Editions #794622. Published by Music Macri Editions (A0.1195453).

SKU: A0.1445179

Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 22 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #1025048. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1445179).

Written for a fundraising effort to restore “Old Ironsides”, the 1797 USS Constitution, who played a pivotal role in the War of 1812. The ship is the oldest in the world still afloat. One should note that the Marine Band’s edition was scored by Master Gunnery Seargent Donald Patterson, who added material to the existing manuscript for the collection.

This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Old Ironsides was composed in 1926, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2020. The piece is catalogued as Volume 6, No. 104.

Section titles (such as “First Strain” and “Trio”) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

String Quartet No. 3 (Old-Time) was composed on the occasion marking 400 years of history dating from the days of the first European settlements. My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600’s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800’s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.

For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward.

SKU: A0.533591

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 66 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3029399. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533591).

Cerulean: Double Percussion Concerto (2004) for two solo percussionists and ensemble
was commissioned by the Carnegie Mellon School of Music for percussionists Cory Cousins,
Mike Perdue, and the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales, director.
The work is dedicated to them and to Howard Stokar. The work is inspired by the ocean,
particularly its greatest depths.
The work is in two movements, played without break. The two movements explore the same
musical material (a specific collection of twelve pitches) in two very different ways. In the
first movement, the material is presented often in row forms -- and harmonies derived from it.
In the second movement, a more free approach is used to the material and it becomes more
motivic and gestural.
The first movement, Different Purposes, is inspired by the vast diversity of deep-sea life.
Musical objects interact with each other and ideas transform each other. Many of these deepsea
creatures live in very isolated and solitary environments at the ocean's lowest points.
They each exist and pursue their own purposes without any awareness of what else is
happening around them. However, despite this, they are all existing within a common
environmental system and are thus achieving goals together on a larger level.
The second movement, Different Porpoises, is inspired by porpoises and other sea-creatures
who surface, thus providing a link to human land-bound life. The marimba establishes a
rhythmic ostinato which (although passed around) remains steady throughout most of the
movement.
