It is designed to teach as well as entertain. Each part is featured at various times, thus promoting strength throughout the section. NOTE: Audio sample clip begins at Letter A. Preface:In the early 1890s, Debussy composed the opening of a lyrical piece in E major for violin and piano, perhaps as a shorter companion piece for the violin Nocturne he was planning for the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. After Debussy’s death in 1918, his second wife Emma often gave away sketch pages to performers or composers as memorials to her beloved husband , and this particular page was given to the Cuban born pianist and composer Joaquin Nin (1879-1949). It came up for sale in the catalogue of the British antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in 2010 and although it might possibly be an early song for contralto and piano, the more dynamic idea in bar 12 strongly suggests the violin, especially as it begins on an open D string. Moreover, there is no text and in pieces of this length, Debussy usually wrote at least one word in, if only to remind himself where he had got to in any song. So my starting point was a complete 12-bar melody gently undulating in the violin’s lowest register over a sensual accompaniment, rising to a climax in bar 12 and giving me a contrasting idea that I could use as a link between sections and in the cadenza. As the B section (bars 14-26) derives directly from Debussy’s opening theme by metamorphosis, my own additions were restricted to the central section (bars 27-57) - comprising a new scherzando idea (C) and the more lyrical D (bars 36-46). C returns at bar 47, followed by the opening sections in reverse order, so that the Sérénade begins and ends with Debussy’s material and is cast in arch form (ABCDCBA). Robert OrledgeBrighton, 19 June 2019Robert Orledge was born in Bath in 1948 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained his doctorate for his study of the composer Charles KÅ“chlin in 1973.   Between 1971 and 1991 He rose from Lecturer to Professor in the Music Department of the University of Liverpool, publishing books on Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Charles KÅ“chlin and Erik Satie, as well as numerous articles, editions and reviews.   As a historical musicologist, Professor Orledge specialized in the way composers composed, ,and since taking early retirement in 2004, he has concentrated on completing and orchestrating Debussy’s unfinished works, and especially his theatre projects. His completion of Debussy’s opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1908-17) was successfully premiered at the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria in August 2006 and has since been performed in America, Portugal Germany and Holland, as well as being broadcast throughout Europe. A DVD of the Bregenz premier is available on Capriccio 93517, produced by Phylida Lloyd and conducted by Lawrence Foster. Today they are still very popular, particularly at fiestas and  other social events.2.Cabaliño is a Galician work song about a young horse, arranged in the style of a flamenco tango.3. La Petenera is  a combination of two songs in very different styles - a flamenco Petenera from Andalucía and a Mexican son huasteco, a genre that is noteworthy for its flamboyant and virtuoso violin parts.4. Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside.  The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

This is the third of a set of three Pièces en trio published in Paris in 1692 which have previously been attributed to Jean Baptiste Lully.  The scoring indicated was ‘ Pour les Flutes, violin, & Dessus ve Viole Composées par M. Marais, Ordinaire, de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy.’ The dedication was to Mademoiselle Roland.The Suite has thirteen separate movements though the Double is a variation of the preceding Gavotte and the four Menuets would have been played without a break. In editing the Suite I have modernised the musical notation e.g. notes tied over bar/measure lines indicated by a dot are shown as tied notes of the correct value. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. No dynamic markings are indicated in the original edition and, as these are very much a matter of individual taste, I have left them to your discretion.The suite is for three equal players of intermediate standard and above. The movements are, Prelude, Sarabande, Fantaisie champetre, Gavotte en rondeau, Double, Gigue, Bransle Village, Rigaudon, 4 Menuets & Symphonie.The arrangement includes a clarinet, an instrument which was being developed from the chalumeau in the late seventeenth century by Johan Denner and his son in Nuremburg.
