Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.1068420). This piece was written in April 2003 for the Thornesian Prize Competition for a piece for SATB. The composer, who sung in many choirs in his teens and twenties, before damaging his vocal chords, at last felt that he should write something for choir. The music uses a modal tune for the word lullaby, and interweaves this with the opening phrase of the 15th century Coventry Carol. Changing modulations and a few words and phrases are used to suggest the atmosphere of the coming of the angels and the three kings.This is the performance  by the dwsChorale. A slower version by the Alteri Choir is also available.

This work for flutist and piano is not at all a set of variations on a theme, because the flute always plays, without embellishment, the same sixteen-measure sequence four times. The four first measure of the this theme are played once as an intro- duction. The piano, however, is asked to create a different atmosphere each time the theme returns, replacing the meaning of the words. It is therefore the job of the flutist to find a different way of presenting the same theme, sequence by sequence, which is not entirely the easiest thing to do!

This version is arranged as a duet for one Alto and one Tenor Saxophone.There are two melodies in use for Shlof Mein Kind. The melody in this arrangement is the lesser known one, as sung by Paul Robeson. There is no record of the tune’s composer, but the words are a setting of a poem by the Jewish Ukrainian writer, Sholem Aleichem. Aleichem is best known as the creator of the Tevye short stories, which later inspired the musical Fiddler on the Roof.Shlof Mein Kind is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments.
