Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733026). Gustave Louis Ganne was one of the leading composers of light music in France during his lifetime. As a young man he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory and while there Ganne studied composition with Jules Massenet and organ with Cesar Franck. Soon after leaving the conservatory Ganne made a name for himself with his compositions: marches waltzes mazurkas and many other types of music. He is best remembered for his theatrical works first his ballets and later the operettas. Ganne was also a highly competent conductor in the theaters of Paris and later in Monte Carlo. In Monte Carlo he established a series of extremely popular orchestral presentations known as Les Concerts de Louis Ganne. In 1901 he was elected president of the Societ des Auteurs Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique. The French government later presented him with the Legion of Honor with extra orders. Ganne was loved and admired by those who knew him because of his character and prodigious talent. He died in Paris on July 13 (or 14) 1923. Marche Lorraine is one of Gustav Louis Gannes most well loved marches. It radiates a luminous sophisticated elegance. This march has played an important historic role in France and the Alsace Lorraine area.

Cádiz is a comic-lyric-dramatic national episode (zarzuela) in two acts, divided into nine paintings, with music by Federico Chueca and Joaquín Valverde, with a libretto by Javier de Burgos. It premiered at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, on November 20, 1886. Cádiz (which is pronounced KAH-dis and not KAY-dis) is a Spanish seaport and naval base on the Southwest shore of the Atlantic Ocean, between the Portuguese border and the Strait of Gibraltar. (Cadiz, which is pronounced KAY-dis, is a little town in Western Kentucky on Interstate 24, about 20 miles west of Hopkinsville.) This march is one of many popular military marches in Spain.

The full brass section joins at the end of opening refrain, with woodwinds joining for the stanza and refrain that can be repeated as needed. The harmonies are spread across the low brass and trumpets and lower woodwinds. The flugal, mellophone and baritone horn continue with the melody throughout with high woodwinds doubling the melody. The percussion section includes quad toms, timpani, snare, and bass drum. The flute part could be doubled by xylophone and/or other pitch percussion in octaves. The lower register long tones lend itself to a warm up to begin the show and the rhythmic cadence for this piece makes it a good down field number to place the marching band in a presentation formation for additional selections.
